If you’re wondering whether CBD (cannabidiol) can really help you sleep better, then you’re in the right place. In this article, we take a look at whether or not CBD has the power to help you battle insomnia. A lot of studies have been conducted. CBD has been put to the test and the results are in!

According to the National Institute of Health, CBD has the properties to help you slumber more peacefully and deeply. If you’re someone who has suffered from insomnia, this product may be able to help.

CBD can be taken in a variety of ways, ranging from oils to capsules, and even gummy candies. No matter how you take it, once in your system, it interacts with your endocannabinoid system to help your body maintain balance and stability - a state that is known as homeostasis.

Although potent in various ways, CBD is not psychoactive. This means that it will not get you ‘high’ but rather its effects are ideal for a range of health applications, such as reducing seizure occurrence in those with epilepsy. It’s also great for pain relief from a lot of different chronic conditions.

However, where CBD truly shines is in the insomnia department where research suggests that it effectively helps those affected by sleepless nights to achieve deep and restful sleep. For the most part, the evidence supporting such claims is anecdotal, but there are some major studies that were conducted in recent years that show that CBD does indeed help to enhance the quality of sleep in users.

What Research Says About CBD for Sleep

To understand how CBD can affect your quality and quantity of sleep, it’s important to first understand what causes sleeplessness in the first place. There are many different things that can cause a person to sleep badly, including:

  • Mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Certain types of medication which may disturb the sleep-wake cycle
  • Chronic pain, restless leg syndrome, and other physical health conditions
  • Caffeine consumed during the late hours of the day
  • Loud noises, uncomfortable bed, unfamiliar surroundings, or other environmental factors

CBD may prove extremely helpful in treating the causes of your insomnia if the condition results from external factors or other related conditions.

Finding Your Dosage

It’s important to note that there is no ‘right dosage’ when taking CBD to aid in sleep. This is due to numerous factors that are different per individual. Such factors include existing tolerance levels for CBD, your body weight or type, and the severity of insomnia.

Although, there are suggested starting points when you’re on a quest to find out the right dosage. Something to consider when identifying your dosage is the concentration of CBD in the product (usually in milligrams or mg). Another is accurately interpreting the serving size to the amount of CBD in a serving. For example, a 10 ml bottle with 500 mg of CBD means that a serving size is 1 ml is 50 mg of CBD.

Plan to dose for the mildest effect, especially if it’s your first time.

  • Less than 130 lbs weight, start with 10 mg or less
  • For 130 lbs to 200 lbs weight, start with 15 mg or less
  • For 200 lbs or more weight, start with 20 mg or less

As you see how your first night goes, you can adjust based on the outcome if you need a little more or if the dose you took was good enough. Adjust the dose in 3-5 mg increments and nothing more.

Consumption Methods

There are different ways you can take CBD and it all depends on the type of product.

CBD edibles

  • added to food and beverages
  • may take 2 hours to take effect

CBD oils and tinctures

  • liquid dropper dosing
  • taken under the tongue
  • 20-40 minutes to take effect

CBD vapor

  • inhaled through a vaping tool
  • less discreet than other methods
  • immediate effect, but is short-term

CBD topical and transdermal

  • use of lotions, creams, or patches
  • may take up to 5 hours to take effect, but is long-term

Of course, research into CBD is still in its early infancy. However, there is already evidence to show that CBD has massive potential when it comes to treating various sleep disorders, including excessive daytime sleepiness. Also, research published in 2019 shows that by soothing and reducing other conditions, such as anxiety and chronic pain, CBD does indeed improve the quality of sleep in most individuals who experience poor sleep.
